Membership costs
Smart401k payment options:
- pay Annually at $199.95 per year, or
- pay Quarterly at $59 per quarter ($236 per year)
We require that you provide credit card or debit card information during the secure sign-up process, and you will be able to continue with registration once your card is approved. As an alternative, you can call us at 877.627.8401 to sign up via telephone. We also accept payment by personal check; call for details.
Our memberships are designed to be ongoing, so we will continue to charge your card-of-record each time your membership is up for renewal.
We do offer a discount to employees from the same company who sign up for membership together. If you have a group of five or more co-workers ready to join, contact us about receiving a group discount.
Eligible retirement plans
Smart401k provides investment advice for people participating in a work retirement plan - also called an employer-sponsored plan. The most common examples are:
- 401(k),
- the federal Thrift Savings Plan,
- 403(b),
- 457
- and small-business plans like SEP-IRA and SIMPLE IRA.
We are able to provide investment advice for each of these plans and for any other defined contribution plans your employer offers. We cannot provide advice for defined benefit plans (like pensions) because employers invest the money held in these plans without employee input.
Plan investment options
Your retirement plan does not provide us a list of your investment options, so we ask you to give us that information. During the registration process, you will have the ability to list the funds available within your retirement plan. You can also email the information to us at info@smart401k.com or fax it at 866.666.5583. If your plan changes the investment options available, you can send us an updated list of your plan options anytime. As always, feel free to call an adviser at 877.627.8401 with questions.
We work with a large number of plans that do not offer publicly traded funds, so we have the resources and experience to deal with these plans. However, to ensure that we make the appropriate recommendations, we ask that you provide additional information about your funds when you register. The literature your company has given you should provide past performance history, like one-, three- and five-year performance. Please include that for us in addition to a list of the funds available.
Recommendation updates
We make an initial investment recommendation when you join Smart401k. We will post updated investment recommendations to your account. You'll know when updated recommendations are available because we will send you an email to let you know. You can expect to hear from us during the first week of each quarter - January, April, July and October - to let you know that you should log in to your Smart401k account and view your updated recommendation.
Why can't I get a one-time recommendation?
Managing your retirement account is an ongoing event. You can't get into shape after one visit to the gym. Your car isn't set for life after one oil change. We encourage ongoing maintenance and review of your retirement strategy. You can choose to pay by the quarter or save a few dollars and pay for the year. We hope you'll stick with us and stick with regular reviews of your plan; however, if you're not satisfied with the service at any time, you can cancel your membership through the Member Center. Our goal is to help you create a strong strategy for reaching your retirement goals - through planning and regular maintenance, retirement confidence is within your reach.
Smart401k membership as an employment benefit

Canceling Smart401k service
If you wish to cancel your Smart401k membership, sign in to your Smart401k account using your user name and password, choose My Smart401k Account from the top menu tab. Payment Information will provide you with access to your billing profile. You can update your credit card information, change your renewal status and cancel membership.
